Rio Tinto makes new senior appointments, changes structure

Global mining company Rio Tinto is implementing a series of management changes under its new CEO Jean-Sébastien Jacques, who will take over from Sam Walsh on July 1.

The changes, effective July 2, will be adjusted "to better align the group's assets with the business strategy to help drive further efficiencies and optimize performance," the UK-based company said in a press release.

Rio Tinto will now have four product groups: aluminum; copper and diamonds; energy and minerals; and iron ore, which will be complemented by the newly created growth and innovation group, which will focus on future assets and technical support.

As head of the copper and diamonds group, the company appointed Arnaud Soirat, currently president and CEO of Rio Tinto's primary metal, aluminum unit.

Chris Salisbury, currently acting head of the copper and coal unit, will become head of the iron ore unit, replacing Andrew Harding, who will leave the post on July 1.

Alfredo Barrios will continue as head of Rio Tinto's aluminum division, while Alan Davies will head the energy and minerals unit, overseeing the coal, uranium, salt, borates and titanium dioxide businesses, as well as the iron business in Canada.

Stephen McIntosh, acting technology and innovation group executive, will assume as head of the growth and innovation division, the company said.
