Sacyr wraps up northern Chile highway works
Spanish infrastructure company Sacyr Concesiones has completed an overhaul of an 86km stretch of Chile's national route 5 highway.
The work was part of a two-phase expansion and improvement project corresponding to 187km between the cities of La Serena, in Coquimbo region (IV) and Vallenar, in Atacama region (III).
A total of around 250mn euros (US$285mn) was invested in both phases, Sacyr said in a statement.
The first stretch, of 101km, was completed in May 2015.
Sacyr, through its in-country subsidiary Ruta del Algarrobo, will operate and maintain the La Serana-Vallenar highway for 35 years. Around 5,200 vehicles a day use the stretch, Sacyr said.
Work included widening (into four-lane divided highway) and building footbridges, median strips, service lanes and bus stops.
Improvements to the highway will reduce travel time between the two destinations by 20%, Sacyr said.
The full project was delivered five months behind schedule, representing an 11% delay based on the construction schedule stipulated within the contract, according to BNamericas' Project Risk Analytics.
