São Paulo stadium allegedly built for Lula
The 1.2bn-real (US$381mn) Corinthians stadium in São Paulo city was allegedly built by Brazilian construction group Odebrecht for former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as a thank you for favoring the conglomerate during his eight-year tenure.
Emílio Odebrecht, founder of the group and head of its board, made the claim during a plea bargain, local paper Folha de São Paulo reported.
The executive has been cooperating with federal government prosecutors since his son, Marcelo Odebrecht, was arrested last year by federal police as part of its Lava Jato corruption investigation.
While the former president served two terms from 2003-10, the stadium was built in 2011-14. From 2003-14, Odebrecht's annual revenue jumped from 17bn reais to 132bn reais, the paper said.
Corruption charges have been filed against Lula for allegedly being involved in a bribery scheme related to Odebrecht contracts in Angola, in addition to several other counts related to the billion-dollar corruption scandal at state-run oil giant Petrobras.
