Second wind for Engie Energía Perú project

Peru’s government has granted Engie Energía Perú additional time to complete feasibility studies for a US$350mn wind farm that would be built in Ica region.

The company picked up a temporary concession for the 300MW Punta Lomitas Norte project in May 2017 and had 24 months to carry out the studies.

Earlier this year, Engie submitted a request to the energy and mines ministry for an additional 12 months due to force majeure related to delays in the pre-operation study approval process by grid operator COES and wind modeling results.

In a resolution, the ministry accepted the request to renew the concession for the project.

TEMPORARY CONCESSIONS

Punta Lomitas Norte is one of eight temporary power generation concessions awarded for almost 1.8GW in total.

The other concessions are for wind farms El Pato (80MW, Abei Energy Perú) and Los Vientos (350MW, Kallpa Generación); hydros Ccollpani (49.7MW, Empresa de Generación Eléctrica Ccollpani), San Gabán I (110MW, Empresa de Generación Eléctrica San Gabán) and Vilcanota 4 (62.1MW, Empresa de Generación Eléctrica Santa María); and solar parks Majes II (80MW, SW Energías Limpias del Sur) and Solar Sunny (500MW, Kallpa Generación).

Also from Peru’s power sector, the ministry reported that its rural electrification office DGER invested 135mn soles (US$41mn) in the first half or 38.4% of its 2019 budget.

Eleven rural electrification works were completed in 1H19, benefitting 44,000 residents in 705 communities in Áncash, Apurímac, Cajamarca, Cusco, Lima, Madre de Dios and Puno regions, DGER director Hugo Sulca said in a release.

He added that as part of a first photovoltaic electrification program, 29,329 systems were installed nationwide in January-June, benefitting 117,000 people, and that a total of 132,408 systems have been installed, benefiting 530,000 people.
