Sedeur defends Jalisco hwys. against Semarnat warning

Sedeur, the urban development agency for central-western Mexico's Jalisco state, has responded to an environment ministry (Semarnat) warning over highway compliance by saying it has followed federal procedures. "What I can confirm is that for now, and in agreement with the advances on meeting environmental obligations, I don't see where any of the [highway] works could be suspended," Sedeur official Francisco Hernández said in a document obtained by BNamericas. Hernández was responding to Semarnat head Alberto Cárdenas' warning that if Sedeur does not meet the environmental requirements for works on Jalisco's Mascota-Las Palmas and Villa Purificación-Chamela coastal highways, then the highways would be closed down. Further, Cárdenas' comments "are general observations on the fulfillment of environmental issues of any public works... they are just observations as part of a procedure," Hernández added. The Sedeur official could not say when the highway projects had to comply with Semarnat's observations. Newspaper El Informador reported earlier this week the government may suspend the two highway projects because state road authorities never carried out environmental impact studies.
