Brazil: Siemens technology is used in MRS Logística's digital solution for unmanned trains
This is a machine translation of Siemens' press release, originally in Portuguese
A company specializing in innovation, Siemens, together with Newon, supported the development of an innovative solution to ensure the safety of MRS Logística trains that transport ore operating without a crew in a Self-Rescue Zone (ZAS), that is, where presence is not allowed or flow of people. The project was developed for one of the largest logistics operators in the country by Newon, a leader in bespoke digitization and automation technologies.
“We studied together with Newon how the Siemens automation solution could meet the safety requirements of MRS Logística, which needed to remove the driver while traveling in risk areas”, says Felipe Azevedo, business development engineer at Siemens. The driver gets off the locomotive at the beginning of the stretch where he cannot circulate and finds a station where he remotely monitors the autonomous functioning of the system. If necessary, there is also the possibility of remote intervention. The initial partnership equipped eight sets of locomotives.
The solution is based on an automation hardware architecture aimed at applications in railway complexes, with sufficient robustness to withstand the physical conditions imposed by this type of operation. The platform is integrated with open monitoring systems via industrial protocols through radio frequency at 400 Mhz and 4G LTE cellular network, using IIoT industrial internet of things technologies, guaranteeing total autonomy. The operation is monitored using an industrial tablet on site and integrated into the logistics operator's Control Center.
