SNAPSHOT: Electroperú's project pipeline

Peruvian state power company Electroperú and private generator Edegel were the top electricity producers in February.

Each operator accounted for 14.9% of the 4,016GWh produced in the month. The output figure was up 15.5% from February 2015, according to information from grid administrator COES.

To learn more about the state company's plans to maintain market share and cover growing demand, BNamericas provides a glimpse at Electroperú's development plans.

The state operator's current push looks to strengthen water supply to its 1,080MW Mantaro hydro – Peru's largest hydroelectric complex – to help offset impact of dry periods.

Planned works target the Huari and Pachacayo river basins and include construction of the Abascocha dam, dams at the Norma and Antacocha lagoons, and increasing storage capacity of the Chilicocha lagoon.

This year, Electroperú expects to sign a rights of way agreement with the Suitucancha community to carry out the Abascocha project, and to formalize a deal with Cerro el Águila which would provide financing.

Electroperú also looks to close a financing agreement with Cerro el Águila for the Norma and Antacocha dams.

Additional field studies are planned this year for Chilicocha.

In addition, Electroperú is evaluating potential for a possible gas-fired plant which would act as backup during a planned integral overhaul of Mantaro, and then be available for future contracts.

Other studies look to identify new hydroelectric projects which could be carried out with the private sector.
