Stellar Energy proposes US$500mn-600mn waste-to-energy Bahamas plant
Renewable energy firm Stellar Energy hopes to gain the Bahamas government's support for a proposal to build a waste-to-energy plant at the New Providence landfill, local newspaper Tribune 242 said.
Stellar estimates the plant would cost US$500mn-600mn and create 50-80MW of electricity capacity. Construction would take approximately 18 months, creating 400-500 full-time jobs. Additionally Stellar is offering to provide 15 new garbage trucks to the government.
The firm will have clearer project estimates when it completes a planned US$200,000 waste study to ascertain the landfill's energy potential, the report said.
However, Stellar's proposal is competing against at five other proposals while the Bahamas government has deferred any waste-to-energy project decisions until next year.
