Study estimates Puerto Rico’s offshore wind potential at nearly 41GW

The technical potential capacity of onshore and offshore wind in Puerto Rico could reach 6.81GW and 40.76GW, respectively.

The figures are part of a new report released by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

In 2020, the island’s energy regulator NEPR ordered power utility PREPA to conduct an offshore wind study to evaluate the installation of anchored and floating turbine options as part of the next integrated resource plan review cycle.

In recent days, Luma Energy, which took over transmission and distribution operations of PREPA for 15 years in June 2021, notified NEPR that it was waiting receipt of the report.

“Puerto Rico’s small size means that land use presents a series of challenges as the grid moves towards 100% renewable electricity … Deployment of offshore wind energy may help mitigate some of these concerns, but presents other challenges,” according to the study.

The 104-page NREL report, which includes an assessment of costs and the impact of hurricanes, is available here.
