São Paulo, May 10, 2022 - The Telefónica Group, leader in the network virtualization market with operations in 10 countries around the world, has selected AWS Outposts to be part of the infrastructure of its cloud-native 5G network core in Brazil , aiming to implement autonomous 5G services. The initiative will optimize Vivo 's offer of 5G services to Brazilian customers.

AWS Outposts enable customers to run compute, storage, database and other services in on-premises environments while connecting to AWS' wide range of cloud services. This offering brings AWS' cloud-native infrastructure and operating models to virtually any data center. With AWS Outposts, customers can use the same APIs, control panel, tools and hardware as AWS to deliver a fully hybrid experience.

Telefónica will use the infrastructure, breadth and depth of AWS services to build a reliable, scalable, secure and cost-effective 5G cloud core that will enable rapid development and deployment of new products. Telefónica predicts that its 5G core will work in the cloud, in a hybrid environment between Vivo's infrastructure and AWS Outposts. This approach brings the best of both worlds to provide the low latency and high throughput required by User Plane Functions (UPFs) while benefiting from the scalability of the cloud.

With this initiative, Telefónica will use AWS telecommunications solutions to automate the implementation, management and operation of the containerized network functions of the AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service. Using AWS native managed services will reduce time to market by enabling the creation of value-added services in 5G, such as network slicing and edge computing.

"We reviewed and tested the most advanced hybrid cloud infrastructure solutions on the market and selected AWS for its mature and reliable cloud technology, as well as AWS' commitment to implementing the resources necessary for us to develop and operate workloads of This partnership will contribute to our strategy of building a new operating model for cloud-native networks", says Elmo Matos, Vivo's Planning Director.

"This is a big step for Vivo on its digital transformation journey and we are thrilled to have been chosen to implement its cloud-native 5G network core. By building its 5G network core on AWS Outposts, Vivo leads and indicates the path of adoption of cloud-native infrastructure for the entire industry, a model that offers full automation and elasticity at scale, taking advantage of the ability to dynamically allocate resources and capacity to meet the needs of its customers", comments Jan Hofmeyr, VP of AWS Edge Cloud.
