TerraCycling projects its recycling in Brazil up 100% year-on-year
US-based recycling company TerraCycle is expecting its 2013 collection and recycling service in Brazil to jump 100% compared to last year, the head of the company's Brazil unit, Bruno Massote, told BNamericas.
The company, which measures its service by the number of consumer product packages received, reported a total of 9mn packages in 2012 in Brazil.
"This year, we are expecting to collect at least 18mn packages and we looked to be in track during the third quarter of the year," Massote said.
In terms of collecting, TerraCycle works directly with companies and municipal governments. It has agreements with firms like Pepsico, Fabber Castel, Colgate, Avon, Copertone, Loreal, Fast Shop, Brasil Foods, and Suzano, as well as with the town of Parnaíba in the mid-western state of Mato Grosso do Sul.
The latter involves collecting recyclable material from 68 public schools that actually retain a part of the revenue received from recycling.
We are looking for new partnerships with companies as well as with cities and towns, Massote said.
Finally, the executive highlighted that it has its own line of products developed from its recycled material. In the U.S., it works with major manufacturers of housewares, furniture, office supplies and pet products, and in Brazil, it has developed approximately 200 products so far.
We are currently studying the best sales channel for mass marketing of such products and we are obviously very open to new partnerships to this regard, added Massote.
Active in 23 countries overall, TerraCycle collected a total of 113mn packages in 2012. Just over 76% of this (about 86mn) came from its leading country, the United States, while Brazil with 9mn packages was ranked second.
