Tuenti faces legal issues after Guatemala launch
Guatemala's telecom watchdog SIT filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office against mobile virtual operator Tuenti a week after it began commercial operations in the country.
According to the SIT, Tuenti began offering services without being registered as a commercial network operator or a local network operator.
The regulator issued a statement saying that while it was responsible for filing the complaint, it will be the prosecutor's office who will determine the corresponding sanctions.
Tueti is a subsidiary of Spanish operator Telefónica and it was launched to compete against América Móvil's Claro, and Luxembourg-based group Millicom's Tigo subsidiaries in the prepaid segment. Tuenti currently operates in Argentina, Ecuador, and Peru.
There were 17.6mn prepaid lines in Guatemala in the first half of last year. Tigo had a 54.6% market share, followed by Claro with 28.5% and Telefónica with 16.7%.
