US$600mn Santiago monorail due to be ready by 3Q24

The US$600mn monorail that will connect the Cienfuegos and Pekín sectors of the Dominican Republic’s Santiago city should be ready by the third quarter of 2024, reported local media.

Officials toured the construction site during the week.

The monorail will have capacity to transport nearly 40,000 passengers per hour. Trains will run at 80km/h every 90 seconds, which is a milestone for Central America and the Caribbean.

The works are being carried out by Consorcio Sistema de Transporte Metropolitano de Santiago, which is formed by Ingeniería Estrella and Sofratesa Projects.

The 15km line will have 16 stations and connect to a cable car line, which should be ready in Q3 of this year, newspaper El Nuevo Diario reported.
