Winners surface in Panama power supply call

Panama’s state power transmission company Etesa has awarded contracts to cover the near-term energy requirements of the country’s electricity distributors.

The process entails the supply of firm capacity and energy to Empresa de Distribución Eléctrica Metro-Oeste (Edemet), Empresa de Distribución Eléctrica Chiriquí (Edechi) and Elektra Noreste (ENSA) from April 1, 2020 to December 31, 2022.

Of the 33 groups that submitted offers, 18 were selected, according to documents seen by BNamericas.

Enel Fortuna was the big winner, followed by AES Panamá, Bahía Las Minas and Pedregal Power.

Etesa has authorized the generators and distributors to sign the power supply deals.

Participation was open to generators and self-generators in the local wholesale power market that hold a definitive license, self-generation or concession certificate granted by public services regulator Asep.

DEMAND

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, residential power demand in Panama is expected to remain stable, perhaps increase as more people stay at home, while industrial and commercial offtake is projected to fall.

Information from the country’s national dispatch center (CND) shows that maximum demand hit a record 1,969MW on March 10, which according to experts cited in local press would be due to greater air conditioning use.

Maximum demand on March 31, however, reached 1,295MW, according to CND data.
