Works to offset flood damage advance in Nova Friburgo

Brazil's federal government is advancing with a project to mitigate flood damage in Nova Friburgo city, in Rio de Janeiro state.

The cities ministry said in a statement that it launched the first phase of 183mn reais (US$50mn) of drainage and canalization works in the Bengalas river basin.

The project, which will benefit 46,567 people, was approved in 2011, when heavy rains affected the city leading to floods and landslides that caused 915 deaths while another 340 people went missing. The tragedy was considered the worst climatic disaster in the history of Brazil.
