YPF, Statoil sign Argentina offshore seismic agreement
State-owned oil companies YPF (Argentina) and Statoil (Norway) signed an agreement to jointly study Argentina's offshore hydrocarbon potential through a 2D seismic shoot.
The companies will collect data on an area roughly the size of Germany, extending from the border with Uruguay to the 45th parallel south, near the city of Comodoro Rivadavia, YPF said in a statement.
The 360,000km2 frontier zone, which covers the Salado, Colorado and Argentina basins, presents "high potential and high risk," YPF said.
Offshore exploratory efforts in Argentina so far have been limited to shallow waters in the Salado, Colorado and Golfo San Jorge basins.
In related news, Uruguay's government announced Thursday that Statoil, Total and ExxonMobil will farm into the Royal Dutch Shell-operated offshore block 13, which targets the Punta del Este basin.
