Rail services in Paraná state are in poor condition, especially given the importance of the state to Brazil's economy. Agricultural export production shipped from the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraguay also stand to benefit from a more modern railway. The section is one of three planned to eventually cover the route from Maracaju to the port of Paranaguá. Section one of the rail line will run from the port of Paranaguá to Guarapuava, parallel to route BR-277.
