Underground mining Coal Minerals & Metals

Description: La Tabaquera is a coal mining project in Guaduas, central Colombia, an area known for high-quality coking coal. A 57ha concession is wholly owned by Florida-based firm New Colombia Resources Inc, formerly known as VSUS Technologies. The company is also applying for neighboring concessions. A September 2011 report estimated reserves for La Tabaquera project to be 17Mt of bituminous coal (non JORC compliant), with 70% being metallurgical hard coking coal and 30% thermal coal. The project has easy access to export terminals in Barranquilla, Santa Marta or Cartagena by road or via the Magdalena river, which is being dredged to allow for cargo transport. New Colombia Resources intends to process and sell waste rock from the site as aggregates, taking advantage of the high local demand for construction materials. A large rock crushing plant has been purchased for this purpose. The company intends to fund development of the coal mine with cash flow generated from aggregate sales.
