Paraguay pushes ahead with small hydro plans

Paraguay's industry and trade ministry, through investment and export network Rediex, in February launched a renewable energies workgroup where the country's small hydro generation potential was set at close to 3.5GW.

Sites for such projects were identified along various rivers including Aquidaban, Pirapo and Ypané.

During the latest meeting of the government's energy workgroup, state power company Ande head Carlos Heisele announced that a study for a plant on the Ypané river is due to be delivered to the public works ministry's mines and energy department and Ande.

The 14MW project will require US$50mn and be carried out through a public-private partnership. Output would supply demand in Concepción department.
