IN BRIEF: Brazil launches treasury app

Brazil's treasury department will launch an app for individuals to purchase public bonds directly from their mobile phones, the finance ministry reported.

Available initially for Android devices, the Tesouro Direto app will allow users to perform the main transactions regarding the bonds, including investments, redemptions, withdrawals, scheduling and account balance consulting. The app was developed by the country's federal government data processing company, Serpro, and is available starting on Saturday.

Brazil claims to have been the first in Latin America to allow users to purchase treasury bonds online. The system, launched in 2002, also provided information regarding the management and structure of the federal public debt.
