AIIB sees Argentina membership as possible this year

Argentina could become a member of the China-backed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) later this year.

"Argentina has to finish its domestic proceedings and submit the first 20% of its quota," state news agency Télam reported AIIB spokeswoman Laurel Ostfield as saying.

The country's member application was approved last year by the bank's board of governors. The next step is approval by Argentina's congress and making a first member contribution to AIIB.

The bank has 84 member countries and has financed infrastructure projects worth nearly US$4.3bn since its launch in January 2016.

Several Latin America countries are in the process of finalizing their entry as members, including Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Peru.
