Karoon Gas Australia has outlined plans to begin drilling its Kangaroo-2 appraisal well off Brazil's southeast coast in the second week of November.

In a statement, the company said the Olinda Star semi-submersible rig is en route to the Santos basin after a Campos basin campaign for Brazil's state-run oil major Petrobras.

Located about 300m from the area's first discovery well, Kangaroo-2 will test the reservoir sequence in surrounding wells, Karoon said.

"This information will be crucial for assessing the commerciality of the Kangaroo oilfield and, which upon success, will be the basis for the front end engineering and design (Feed) phase, bringing the project a step closer to commerciality," the Melbourne-based firm said.

Karoon holds a 65% stake in the Kangaroo prospect, located within blocks S-M-1101 and S-M-1165.
