Argentine industry minister Débora Giorgi has approved at least eight manufacturing projects to produce 4.5mn portable computers in Tierra del Fuego province, according to a ministry press release.
The approved projects - part of Argentina's initiative to promote electronic equipment production in the southernmost province - will accumulate a total 230mn pesos (US$56.7mn) in investments. An additional eight projects are still under analysis.
The approved projects include plans from BGH to manufacture 990,000 portable computers annually with a 22mn-peso investment, while Newsan will produce 210,000 units investing 26mn pesos and Athuel Electronica 500,000 with an investment of 31.6mn pesos.
Additional projects from Coradir Fueguina, Electronic System, Electrofueguina, Informática Fueguina and Monitar SA total 152mn pesos in investments.
According to Giorgi, while continuing to drive the country's production capacity for electronic equipment, the ministry's objective is to future incentivize such manufacturing and to add value to the products.
Giorgi announced the new projects during a meeting with electronic equipment producers, importers and representatives, during which she provided further explanation of recent changes made to increase the number of imported products monitored by the industry ministry.
