Sonda competed against three other companies to win the contract with a US$181mn proposal.
Under the 10-year contract, which was originally awarded to the company at the beginning of the year, Sonda must supply 1mn Metrobus cards, 250,000 of which must be supplied free of charge for preferential users like the elderly. The remaining 750,000 will be bought by the user, the proceeds of which will be used for a tariff stabilization fund.
Sonda is also required to install and operate an electronic fare collection system in 1,299 buses throughout the system. The IT firm must also administrate 1,000 points of sale and recharge for the cards in the Panama and San Miguelito districts, 10% of which must be open 24 hours a day.
