A temporary consortium formed by Argentine solution developer Unitech and Latin American IT products distributor Aktio, a unit of Brazilian IT firm Grupo Açao, has won a US$4mn tender to modernize the management system at the judicial branch of Argentina's Mendoza province, the two companies announced.
The goal of the project is to speed up judicial processes, decrease court paperwork and introduce digital signatures and continuous management improvement, according to Unitech CEO Aníbal Carmona.
The three-year project - financed by the World Bank's International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) - includes the re-engineering of processes, quality management, design and implementation of the central IT system, training services and related support, and the provision of servers, databases and connectivity works. It will cover 14 judicial units and an additional 45 related organisms, as well as the training of 600 people.
Last month, Aktio VP Leonardo Gannio told BNamericas that the company planned to bid on a series of Argentine government tenders - on both a federal level as well as provincial, including Córdoba, Santa Fe, Neuquén, Mendoza and San Luis. The idea is to cash in on the tenders before October's presidential elections, when public sector activity is expected to dry up.
Government purchases will help drive an expected overall 30% sales jump in the Southern Cone this year, according to Gannio.
Aktio currently has offices in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia and, most recently, in Chile. The company provides solutions from manufacturers such as Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL), IBM (NYSE: IBM) and US software firm Novell.
For its part, Unitech has been involved in a program with Argentina's San Luis provincial government to issue smart ID cards, combining the ID card and driver's license. They use the Tramix system for Match-On-Card technology with fingerprint biometrics to identify the card user, and have an embedded chip that stores basic identification data and allows for electronic signatures.
