Colombia's Atlántico department government has slated a 200bn-peso (US$84.1mn) budget for 2005, much of which will be invested in infrastructure, basic sanitation and other needs that serve the community, El Heraldo reported.

Atlántico governor Carlos Rodado said 6bn pesos had been spent in 2004 to improve irrigation in the department and that a further 10bn pesos would support that effort in 2005.

"The idea of the project is to increase the amount of hectares of land irrigated in the department, which currently is no more than 2% of the department's productive area (260,000 hectares)," Rodado said.
