The government of Venezuela has spent over 670mn bolívares (US$156mn) in the past six years to convert 46 open-air dumps into sanitary landfills, the environment ministry (Minamb) said in a release.
Minamb has been working since 2005 to close the country's dumps and replace them with landfills.
The funds have also been used to improve conditions for informal recyclers and train local governments and citizens on how to better manage solid waste.
The ministry expects to open three more sanitary landfills this month in states Miranda, Mérida and Delta Amacuro.
