Peru's housing, construction and sanitation ministry will begin work shortly on 80 water and sanitation projects within 104 communities in Piura department through its rural water program, Pronasar.
The projects, which will require a total investment of 50mn soles (US$18mn), consist of building 34 new water and sewerage systems and repairing 46 existing systems, as well installing 8,000 residential connections.
The work should be completed by 2012, government news agency Andina reported.
Pronasar will work together with municipal governments in the department, who will provide 20% of funds for new projects and 40% for repairs to existing systems.
More than 70,000 residents will benefit from the initiative in provinces including Ayabaca, Huancabamba, Morropon, Paita, Sechura and Sullana.
