Project Details

The Larreynaga hydro plant project seeks to diversify Nicaragua's energy matrix. The power generated by the new facility will be enough to supply 40,000 households, on the basis of an average monthly consumption of 150kV/h per household. Components include diverting the El Cacao river and building a reservoir that will cover 5.4ha and hold 178,070m3., a 12.5m-high, 241m-wide concrete gravity dam, and a 120m-wide open spillway with a discharge capacity of 55m3/s. The Larreynaga hydro plant project is classified as a non-conventional renewable energy (NCRE) initiative. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) defines, among others, renewable energy in Central America as small hydro plants with an installed capacity below 50MW.
