Engie Energía Chile S.A., formerly E-CL S.A., engages in the production, transmission, and distribution of electric power and in the transportation of natural gas, focusing on industrial clients and mining companies in northern Chile. The company is the largest electric generator in northern Chile and had a 49% market share on the SING grid, measured by installed capacity, as of end-2015. With an installed capacity of 2,108MW, it operates 2,328km of transmission lines, 20 substations, and a natural gas pipeline with a transportation capacity of 8Mm3/d. The Santiago-based company, which was founded in 1981, also operates 10 combined-cycle and coal-fueled power plants in Chile's Antofagasta region (II), with a total installed capacity of 1,770MW, and other smaller plants in the regions of Tarapacá (I) and Arica (XV), with an installed capacity of 336MW. It has 2MW of installed solar capacity and as of end-2015 was building 6MW solar plant Pampa Camarones. In January 2016, Engie closed the sale of 50% of its share capital in Transmisora Eléctrica del Norte S.A. (TEN) to Red Eléctrica Chile SpA for US$218mn.
