Bnamericas Published: Monday, May 25, 2009
Brazil's environmental authority Ibama has set a 45-day period for public assessment of the proposed 11GW Belo Monte hydro project set for the Xingu river, the regulator said in a statement. The EIS for the project was officially received from Eletrobrás, Brazil's federal power holding company. Located in northern Pará state near the city of Altamira, the project will be Brazil's second largest hydro plant when it begins operations. Investment in the project is expected to total 9bn reais (US$4.5bn), a spokesperson for Brazil's mining and energy ministry told BNamericas. Construction is expected to go on auction by October 2009.
