OEA awards Louis Berger Puebla airport study

Bnamericas Published: Monday, March 24, 2003
Mexico's state airport operator OEA has awarded US firm Louis Berger a feasibility study on Puebla state's international airport modernization and airport cargo terminal project, the US Trade & Development Agency (TDA) announced. The US$550,000 feasibility study, awarded by the TDA to the OEA in September, will analyze modernization plans that include upgrades to passenger terminals and installation of a cargo facility for the central Mexican state's airport. The review will also evaluate a possible runway upgrade. The US expects some US$30mn in exports as a result of the US$63mn project which will be launched this month with an expected September completion. Puebla's airport handled about 134,000 passengers in 2000 and, after several years of net losses, posted moderate profits "recently," reads the notice. Mexican carriers Aeromexico, Aeromar and Aerocalifornia as well as US airlines Delta and Continental operate from the airport. The upgrades and additions would help the airport adapt to future growth, which is expected to increase 15% annually in terms of air traffic. The OEA is 51% government-owned, with the remainder held by the Peralta Group and began operations of the airport in December 2000.
