Brazil's communications ministry Minicom and electrical and electronics industries association Abinee will partner to boost the development of locally produced mobile apps, Minicom said in a release on its website. An MOU sealing the partnership was signed by minister Paulo Bernardo and Abinee president Humberto Barbato during Abinee's year-end conference. The agreement lays the ground for the creation of a mobile applications committee formed by the government, OEMs and operators with the aim of working on ways to embed locally developed applications in smartphones. Bernardo expects the initiative to increase developers' interest in creating original content apps. "The applications developed in Brazil should be focused on the local market, and not only be translations of successful applications developed abroad," said the minister, who also sees business opportunities for startups and SMEs. CHEAPER SMARTPHONES Other aspects of the Minicom-Abinee deal involve the reduction of smartphone prices for customers and the fight against unlicensed and pirate handsets. Minicom says that, according to conservative estimates, around 20% of all smartphones available in the country are not registered with the telecoms regulator Anatel. Under the deal, OEMs will commit to work with distributors and retailers to make sure the reduction in smartphone prices is passed on to the end-consumers after the government's smartphone tax break is sanctioned. The measure is expected to be signed by President Dilma Rousseff this week.
