AES wins new Mexico permit for Mérida plant
Mexico has approved a request from US-based utility AES to modify the generation permit for its 505MW combined cycle gas turbine plant on the Yucatán peninsula and sell its output on the wholesale electricity market.
AES Mérida III began operations in May 2000 as Mexico’s first independent power producer. It initially sold its output to state-owned utility CFE under a power purchase agreement (PPA).
The PPA with CFE expired in 2025.
In April, the two companies settled a long-standing arbitration dispute related to alleged breaches of the agreement.
On Monday, the national energy commission (CNE) granted the plant a new generation permit to operate in the wholesale market.
