Aguas Andinas eyes northern water utilities

Bnamericas Published: Wednesday, May 28, 2003
Santiago-based water utility Aguas Andinas is studying pre-qualification guidelines for the concession to operate four northern water utilities, according to Aguas Andinas president Roque Gistau. However, Aguas' interest in the utilities is "not high, not a priority," Estrategia and Diario Financiero quoted Gistau as saying. Earlier this month, state companies administrator SEP made guidelines available through June 5 to pre-qualify for the concession to operate Essat that serves a little over 400,000 residents in Region I, Essan (II, 447,000), Emssat (III, 237,000) and Essco (IV, 511,000). Company background documents are due June 13. In regard to the pre-qualification phase, an official from the process' financial advisor BHIF Asesorias y Servicios Financieros told BNamericas that response to the pre-qualification call to date "has met expectations," although neither the number nor names of those that have purchased guidelines were released due to confidentiality requirements. Southern Region XI's Emssa was the latest water utility to go to concession, in December 2002. Local consortium Aguas Patagonia de Aysen won the 30-year concession with a US$7.71mn bid. Companies Icafal and Empresa de Servicios Sanitarios San Isidro make up Aguas Patagonia de Aysen.
