
AngloGold considers using electric trucks at Brazil mine

South Africa's AngloGold Ashanti is considering using electric trucks at its Brazilian operations and renewable energy in Argentina as part of a plan to reduce greenhouse emissions.
The gold miner announced a prefeasibility study at the Cuiabá mine in Brazil to evaluate the benefits of replacing some of the fleet with battery electric vehicles. In addition, the company said that it is close to transitioning to full hydro-grid power in Brazil.
AngloGold is also evaluating the construction of a wind farm at Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina.
The company in recent days a carbon emissions' reduction target that aims to achieve a 30% absolute reduction in its scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 through a combination of renewable energy projects, fleet electrification and lower-emission power sources.
The Johannesburg-based firm said it will invest US$1.1bn to implement all the measures in the next eight years.
Other mining companies in Brazil, such as iron ore giant Vale and Anglo American, are also investing in projects to reduce emissions as investors are more sensitive to ESG aspects.
