Argentina opens US$111mn Buenos Aires BRT line
Argentina has officially opened a new bus rapid transit (BRT) system in La Matanza municipality in Buenos Aires province, requiring investment of 1.7bn pesos (US$111mn), state news agency Télam reported.
The initiative entailed the construction of exclusive lanes for buses, highway infrastructure and new stops with shelters for passengers, as well as smart traffic lights and underpasses across 16km of the Ruta 3national highway through the area.
The project also includes an intermodal centre that will be finished midway through this year, which will connect the BRT service with the Independencia train station on the Belgrano Sur railway.
Of the total investment, 30% was provided by the local government and the rest by the World Bank, according to a release on the presidential website. The works created 1,000 jobs and will benefit over 240,000 users per day.
Twenty one bus lines will circulate along the new corridor, connecting Ramos Mejía, Lomas del Mirador, San Justo, Isidro Casanova, Rafael Castillo, Gregorio de Laferrere and González Catán. This will reduce travel times by 27% in the case of public transport and by 15% in the case of other vehicles.
President Mauricio Macri said that the initiative was an "historic transformation" of urban transport in the most populous district of Greater Buenos Aires and that the "people had been awaiting this for a very long time."
