Axtel taps MDC data center as hub for US-Mexico connection

Mexican digital infrastructure and managed services provider Axtel has selected MDC Data Centers' MCA2 facility in McAllen, Texas, to host its new point of presence (PoP) in the United States.

Axtel is a major wholesale provider of data connectivity between Mexico and the US. This move follows the announcement in 2025 of Axtel's 1,000km fiber network linking Querétaro with Texas, offering 1.2Tbps capacity.

With the selection of MDC's MCA2 site, Axtel said it is reinforcing its high-availability infrastructure solutions while expanding interconnection through resilient routes, low latency, and operator diversity.

The collaboration also strengthens the digital corridor to Querétaro, Mexico’s top tech hub, by extending the combined reach of Axtel's and MDC's infrastructure.

In Mexico, Axtel operates a 53,000km national fiber network with a presence in 90% of the country's industrial parks. Its backbone connects 77 cities and five international borders.

According to Mexican data center association MEXDC, the industry is expected to attract direct investments of US$9.19 billion over five years for the construction of more than 70 new data centers, most of them in Querétaro.

"This partnership ensures that Axtel remains at the center of the digital ecosystem, not only in McAllen but throughout the entire border between Mexico and the United States," said in a statement Andrés Eduardo Cordovez, executive director of infrastructure and operations.

The integration of MCA2 as an interconnection point enhances Axtel's cross-border capacity via direct access to MDC’s International Fiber Crossings, according to the companies.

It also promotes collaboration among operators, cloud providers, content platforms and businesses within the binational digital ecosystem.

Last year, MDC announced the expansion of its international fiber crossings with two new routes: Laredo to Nuevo Laredo and El Paso to Ciudad Juárez. The additions brought MDC's total number of active international fiber crossings to 11.

"Axtel’s decision marks the final step in McAllen’s evolution into a unified interconnection hub," said Juan Salazar, CEO of MDC Data Centers.

"With every Mexico network now converged at MCA2, the facility stands as the most efficient and inclusive platform for cross-border connectivity, where density, neutrality and operational collaboration drive the growth of a unified digital ecosystem," he added.
