Brazil extends public consultation for Santos port terminal concession
Brazilian port authority Antaq extended the public consultation period from May 16 to May 31 for the concession of the STS53 terminal at Santos, the country’s busiest port.
The 25-year leasing contract is expected to generate 659mn reais (US$130mn) in investments, Antaq said in a press release.
STS53 will mainly handle fertilizers and sulfates, and the auction is expected to be held in the fourth quarter.
The government has offered a series of leasing contracts for terminals recently to boost private investments in the port sector.
At Santos, it plans to offer concessions for another five terminals – including STS53 – by the end of this year, according to the Santos port authority (SPA). Six concessions at the port have already been awarded by the administration of President Jair Bolsonaro and the 11 are estimated to generate combined investments of 7.1bn reais.
Santos is expected to see a capacity boost of 50% by 2040 to 241Mt as a result of the concessions.
