Brazil water utility unveils investment plan that could top US$3bn
Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state water utility Corsan has presented a multi-billion dollar waterworks plan to members of Pró-Sinos, a local waterworks consortium for the Sinos river basin.
The plan, which involves achieving universal potable water supply and sewerage services, has been presented by Corsan president Flávio Ferreira Presser to mayors, secretaries and technicians representing the nine municipalities in the river basin area.
A total of 10bn reais (US$2.99bn) will be needed to implement an integrated waterworks system. However, if a separate sewerage system is needed apart from the water supply system, the investment requirement increases to 15bn reais, Corsan said in a release.
Some investments supported by Corsan and the federal government through its growth acceleration plan, PAC, have already started, according to the release.
In the meantime, the state is eyeing new federal government financing, in addition to other funding by way of the Inter-American Development Bank IDB and public-private partnership possibilities.
