Brazil’s Compass plans to start up LNG terminal in June

Brazil’s Compass Gás e Energia plans to start operations at its liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal in São Paulo state in late June, a source familiar with the matter told BNamericas.

Dubbed Terminal de Regaseificação de São Paulo (TRSP), the plant comprises a floating, storage and regasification unit (FSRU) and mooring dolphins to receive, unload and regasify LNG from foreign shipments to be delivered in Cubatão municipality.

With US$140mn capex, TRSP will have the capacity to regasify 14Mm3/d.

Chartered with Höegh LNG Holdings, the FSRU went through fitting-out procedures at the Brest shipyard in France last November and it is available to sail to Santos port, São Paulo state, to hook up and start commissioning tests.

Part of the Cosan group, Compass is the owner of Comgás, a natural gas distributor in São Paulo state.

The company’s goal is to connect TRSP to the Subida da Serra gas pipeline, through which the fuel will be injected into Comgás’ distribution network.

OTHER PROJECTS

At least two other LNG regasification terminals in Brazil – both owned by New Fortress Energy (NFE) – are scheduled to begin operations this year.

These are the Gás Sul (TGS) and Barcarena terminals in Santa Catarina and Pará states, respectively.

New Fortress Energy says that it does not plan to sell these terminals being built in Pará and Santa Catarina and that Brazil continues to play a strategic role for the company.
