Brazil’s power consumption falls sharply in April
Electric power consumption in Brazil amounted to 39,534GWh in April, down 2.9% from the previous month, and the first fall since June 2018, according to federal energy planning company EPE.
Energy usage dropped for all big consuming sectors: industry, residences, and commerce. Industrial use fell the most - 6% - as result of less mining activity after the accident at the Brumadinho dam in January. Residential consumption fell by 1.9% and commercial use by 1.5%.
“The second quarter of 2019 started with a weakened internal market and slower global trade, which limits in a certain way possible investments decisions and consumption due to economic uncertainty,” EPE said.
The full bulletin, in Portuguese, is available on EPE’s website.
POWER RATES ON THE GREEN FLAG IN JUNE
Power regulator Aneel announced a green-flag tariff base for June, with no additional costs for consumers. Although the month is typically dry, the weather forecast warrants grounds for optimism.
Under a 2015 electricity pricing overhaul, Brazil's four regional sub-systems are allocated green, yellow or red flags. Green represents the cheapest tariff and red level 2 the most expensive.
