Chinchero international airport works to start in 2H20

Construction for Chinchero international airport, in Peru's Cusco region, will begin in the second half of 2020, with operations starting in 2024.

After 40 years, the project was finally launched with the contract signing between Peru and South Korea over technical construction assistance and commissioning through a project management office, transportation and communications minister Edmer Trujillo said Thursday.

According to the minister, South Korea will also assist in the selection processes of the companies that will execute and supervise the works. "Technical assistance also ensures that the airport is fully operational from day one," a ministry (MTC) statement said.

"South Korea competed with Canada, with Spain and Turkey, [and] the best technical and economic proposal was that of South Korea," Trujillo said after signing the contract in Cusco.

Physical works will begin next year, once the ministry selected the company responsible.

Access roads are also important, according to Trujillo. "Therefore, in March next year we will have already approved the technical file for the Cusco-Chinchero-Urubamba highway, [which implies] more than US$1.1bn of investment," he said.

The airport will be built in Chinchero district, Urubamba province, and will facilitate direct flights from and to Bogotá, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Quito and Panama, among others, the ministry said.

South Korea's ambassador to Peru, June-Hyuck Cho, participated in the signing ceremony, as did the undersecretary of transportation, Carlos Estremadoyro, and Cusco governor Jean Paul Benavente, as well as provincial and district mayors.
