Colombia seeks to restore Venezuela power link

Colombia has outlined plans to restore an electricity interconnection with Venezuela as the neighbors pursue broader energy cooperation.

The mines and energy ministry said it is working to settle about US$13mn in outstanding liabilities linked to the interconnection, a step needed for the line to resume operations.

"Reactivating this connection would improve the reliability of the ... electrical system and generate a positive impact on service costs," the ministry said in a statement.

The Puerto Páez-Puerto Carreño interconnection entered service in July 2004 and supplied electricity from Venezuela to Colombia’s eastern border city of Puerto Carreno, with peak demand of about 2.3 MW, according to regional infrastructure records.

Officials last month agreed to advance a bilateral energy agenda covering gas, electricity cooperation and binational infrastructure.

Colombia's government has already said it is moving ahead with plans to import natural gas from Venezuela in a bid to avert a near-term supply deficit of the fuel.
