Colombia starts work on US$540mn suburban train

Colombia began construction on the country’s first 100% electric suburban train, the 1.9tn-peso (US$537mn) Regiotram de Occidente, connecting the municipalities of Facatativá, Madrid, Funza and Mosquera, and Bogotá.

Work will take three years and start in Bogotá, at the workshop yard of infrastructure agency ANI, two years after the construction inauguration ceremony. Progress was halted due to the pandemic.

The 40km line will serve 17 stations and is expected to transport 140,000 passengers per day. It will connect with some stations of the integrated transport system and with metro line No. 1, to further connectivity with Cundinamarca department.

According to Cundinamarca governor Nicolás García, the trains are being assembled and will arrive in October.

Next year, adequation of rail lines will start and operations in 2026.
