Copesul posts H1 net profits of US$153mn

Brazilian petrochemicals company Copesul posted net profits of 368mn reais (US$153mn) in the first half of 2005, up 57% from 234mn reais in the same year-ago period, the company said in a statement. Gross revenues rose 23.7% to 3.81bn reais while Ebitda was up 35.5% at 638mn reais, the statement said. Copesul's revenues rose because of higher prices of petrochemicals since sales volumes in the first six months of 2005 fell 2% to 1.36 million tones from the same period a year ago. Copesul is jointly controlled by Brazilian oil company Ipiranga and industrial group Odebrecht and produces ethylene, among other petrochemicals products. The company was working at 95% of full capacity in the first six months of 2005. Copesul is in Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul.
