Corporate payment defaults surge in Brazil

Payment defaults by companies in Brazil grew in double-digits in the January-July period.

Defaults grew 12.9% year-on-year in the period, the highest rate since January-July 2012 (15.2%), according to credit information firm Serasa Experian.

In July alone, defaults rose 12.6% y-o-y and were up 6% on June.

Serasa economists attributed the strong increases to Brazil's economic downturn, which has hurt companies' cash flow. Higher interest rates have also hit businesses as financing costs have surged.
