Costa Rica presents the National Electric Transportation Plan

The Government of the Republic announced on Wednesday the design of the new plates for electric vehicles and the officialization of the National Electric Transportation Plan that sets the country's route to increase the use of this technology zero emissions.

The announcement was made in an activity in the National Registry, where decrees were signed on "Officialization of the National Electric Transportation Plan (Nº41579-MINAE-MOPT) and" Regulation of Distinctive Vehicles for Electric Vehicles "(Nª41580-MOPT-MJ-MINAE ).

The activity counted with the participation of the President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado Quesada, the First Lady, Claudia Dobles Camargo, and the Ministers of Justice and Peace, Marcia González Aguiluz, of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT), Rodolfo Méndez Mata, and of Environment and Energy (MINAE), Carlos Manuel Rodríguez Echandi.

"We have just presented the National Decarbonisation Plan and today we announce more actions that are aimed at specifying the specific axes of the decarbonisation of our transport sector, where the use of zero emission technologies such as electric vehicles is key to abandoning fuels," he commented. New plates for electric vehicles. In the act was made the signing of the decree that officializes the Regulation of Distinctive for Electric Vehicles, through which the issuance of the badge is established to identify zero emission vehicles.

The vehicles that carry it will not be subject to vehicular restriction of circulation and may make use of special spaces in public or private parking, as well as enjoy exemptions in parking meters that define the municipalities, in accordance with the Law of Incentives and Promotion for Electric Transportation, Law No. 9518.

The Minister of Justice and Peace explained that the National Registry, in conjunction with the Traffic Police, MOPT, MINAE and the Office of the First Lady, established and defined the green color for all vehicles that are electric. "They will be to distinguish all automotors that are zero emissions, both private and public institutions, as well as for light transport or cargo," said Gonzalez Aguiluz.

In the event, the first three were delivered to members of the Electric Mobility Association. People who already have their electric car and wish to change their license plate should only do the substitution process before the National Registry.

National Electric Transportation Plan. The decree that formalizes the National Electric Transportation Plan was also signed, which refers to the actions necessary to promote the use of zero emissions technology and decarbonise the transport sector.

"The future actions are oriented to regulate the exonerations of the spare parts of electric vehicles, to manage financing agreements with preferential conditions with financial entities, as well as agreements with importers of electric vehicles to facilitate the acquisition of private electric transport," explained Minister Rodríguez .

The Plan establishes, among other provisions, to elaborate the regulations for the assembly and production of electric mobility technology, as well as to ensure the necessary infrastructure of a recharging center. In this regard, the Government will announce the new fast-charging network at the national level soon.

On the current scenario of electric vehicles in Costa Rica, the Plan identifies challenges such as ensuring that users have the technological options available worldwide in the country.

It also defines actions in education, according to the Minister of MOPT. "It includes incorporating this technology zero emissions in the technical and professional education programs, and implement training programs aimed at those responsible for the acquisition of public and private fleets," said Méndez Mata.
