Demand increases 3.74% in 2003

Power demand in El Salvador increased 3.74% to 4,312GWh from 2002, according to data from wholesale market administrator Unidad de Transacciones (UT). Generation increased 5.49% to 4,077GWh in 2003 compared to 3,865GWh in 2002. Thermo power accounted for 40.5% (1,652GWh) of power dispatched to the grid in 2003, hydro power 35.8% (1,459GWh) and geothermal 23.8% (966GWh). The main generator in 2003 was state power company CEL with 1,459GWh, followed by Nejapa Power with 805GWh and Duke Energy with 774GWh. Imports during 2003 were 428GWh, down 1.61% from 435GWh in 2002.
