The meeting "Opportunities to integrate demand-side energy policies" was held in person, organized by the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences of the Adolfo Ibáñez University (UAI ) and WEC Chile , within the framework of the Cycle of talks "Challenges of the Energy 2023”.

On the occasion, a discussion panel was held in which the executive director of ACENOR, Javier Bustos, participated, along with the executive president of Generadoras de Chile , Claudio Seebach; the executive deputy director of the Energy Sustainability Agency, Cristina Victoriano; the director of the Center for energy transition ( CENTRA -UAI), Daniel Olivares and María Trinidad Castro, executive director of the World Energy Council Chile, who was the moderator.

"The energy transition is a continuous process of humanity to which it is necessary to adapt and in this context there are five elements that mobilize it: decarbonization, digitization, decentralization, the diversity of perspectives and the disruption of demand," he began. posing Trinidad Castro.

“Historically, discussions have focused on energy generation, transmission and distribution with the paradigm of a passive user. From the trade association that represents unregulated electricity customers, we observe that today users have a new role and that they are the ones who are precisely driving the energy transition”, added Javier Bustos.

The representative of free customers explained that especially from international parent companies and also in Chilean companies there is a greater concern to seek renewable energy supply contracts, to which is added progress within the framework of ESG criteria (environmental, social and governance). "Today there are more than 2,300 free customers that represent about 60% of electricity consumption, so there is tremendous potential in demand," added Javier Bustos.

From Generadoras de Chile, Claudio Seebach recalled that when the association reviewed its purpose, they wondered exactly what electricity is being generated for. And in this context, they observed an invisibility of the role of demand, which represents a great opportunity, especially in the replacement of fossil fuels. From that moment on, the concept of use was included in the purpose of Generadoras de Chile.

By way of conclusion, Javier Bustos stated that “in order for it to be able to exercise this new role that demand currently has, it is important that the regulation considers it at the center of market design. For example, a review of the rush hour schedule is necessary, for which it is very important that the new power regulation be applied as soon as possible”.
